چکیده

Abstract A two-temperature linear spin model is presented that allows an easily understandable introduction to non-equilibrium statistical physics. The model is one that includes the concepts that are typical of more realistic non-equilibrium models but that allows straightforward steady state solutions and, for small systems, development of the full time dependence for configuration probabilities. The model is easily accessible to upper-level undergraduate students, and also provides a good check for computer models of larger systems.

The Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process : An Integrable Model for Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

The Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) plays the role of a paradigm in NonEquilibrium Statistical Mechanics. We review exact results for the ASEP obtained by Bethe Ansatz and put emphasis on the algebraic properties of this model. The Bethe equations for the eigenvalues of the Markov Matrix of the ASEP are derived from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz. Using these equations we explain how to ...

Variational principle for the Pareto power law.

A mechanism is proposed for the appearance of power-law distributions in various complex systems. It is shown that in a conservative mechanical system composed of subsystems with different numbers of degrees of freedom a robust power-law tail can appear in the equilibrium distribution of energy as a result of certain superpositions of the canonical equilibrium energy densities of the subsystems...

Self-organization from structural refrigeration.

The self-organization of a classical current is studied, in an exactly solvable model where both the quantum statistics over microhistories of particles, and the macroscopic phenomenology, can be computed in closed form. It is shown that for thermodynamically reversible systems, the Jaynes formulation of statistical mechanics naturally extends to include explicit macroscopic dynamics and hetero...

Exactly solvable model of the 2D electrical double layer

We consider equilibrium statistical mechanics of a simplified model for the ideal conductor electrode in an interface contact with a classical semi-infinite electrolyte, modeled by the twodimensional Coulomb gas of pointlike ± unit charges in the stability-against-collapse regime of reduced inverse temperatures 0 ≤ β < 2. If there is a potential difference between the bulk interior of the elect...

Dynamics of the maximum marginal likelihood hyper - parameter estimation in image restoration : gradient descent vs . EM algorithm

Dynamical properties of image restoration and hyper-parameter estimation are investigated by means of statistical mechanics. We introduce an exactly solvable model for image restoration and derive differential equations with respect to macroscopic quantities. From these equations, we evaluate relaxation processes of the system to the equilibrium state. Our statistical mechanical approach also e...
